2020+ GENERAL XP 1000 and XP 4 1000 Pre-Ride Inspection

Before you ride your Polaris GENERAL XP 1000 or GENERAL XP 4 1000, perform the pre-ride inspection as described in your Owner’s Manual. Read, understand and follow all the instructions, warnings and safety precautions in the Owner’s Manual and on all product labels. Failure to follow these instructions, warnings and safety precautions could result in serious injury or death.

During your pre-ride inspection, do the following:

1. Visually inspect the vehicle, looking for debris, leaks and worn components that may impair the vehicle’s operation.

2. Pay particular attention to the radiator area for the accumulation of debris, which can cause the engine to overheat, and clean any debris that is found.

3. Check the condition of the tires, looking for any sign of punctures or damage, and inspect the tread depth. Always replace tires when the tread depth is worn to 3mm (1/8 inch) or less.

4. Check the tire pressures and verify they are set to specification. On GENERAL XP 1000 models, the tire pressure should be 10 psi (69 kPa) for front tires and 14 psi (97 kPa) for rear tires. On GENERAL XP 4 1000 models, the tire pressure should be 16 psi (110 kPa) on front tires and 22 psi (152 kPa) on rear tires.

5. Inspect the front and rear suspension for leaks, debris and damage.

6. Inspect the brake pads and rotors, looking for corrosion, nicks and burrs.

7. Lift the cargo box and inspect the intake system for blockage or debris and clean as needed. Caution: DO NOT spray water directly into the intake system, as this can result in water intrusion to the engine.

8. Inspect the PVT intake screen for blockage and debris.

9. Next, inspect the fluid levels. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface before inspecting fluid levels.

10. Start by inspecting the engine oil level. Ensure the oil level is checked on a cold engine. A hot engine will appear overfilled.

  • Remove the oil dipstick and wipe it with a clean shop towel.
  • Reinstall the oil dipstick fully and remove it to inspect the oil level. Caution: Operating with insufficient engine oil will cause accelerated wear. Always maintain the oil level in the safe range.
  • Add oil as needed. Caution: Using a non-recommended engine oil may cause serious engine damage. Always use the recommended engine oil and never substitute or mix engine oil brands.

11. Lower the cargo bed and ensure it is properly secured.

12. Verify the tailgate is properly latched.

13. Next, remove the hood panel by turning the quarter-turn latches and pulling back.

14. Inspect the coolant level in the overflow bottle. Add coolant as needed.

15. Reinstall the hood panel by aligning the front tabs and turning the quarter-turn latches.

16. Inspect the brake reservoir in the driver’s side front wheel well for proper fluid level. Add fluid as needed. Tip: Use a flashlight to illuminate the brake fluid reservoir.

17. Open and close the doors to verify proper operation of the door latches.

18. Most importantly, check the condition and function of the seat belt.

  • Pull the seat belt completely out and inspect for cuts, wear, fraying, dirt, debris or stiffness.
  • Test the buckle and latch for proper operation.

19. Sit in the vehicle and check the steering wheel for smooth operation from full left to full right.

20. Verify proper brake and accelerator pedal movement, taking note of any binding or sticking.

21. Turn the key on and inspect the headlights, taillights and brake lights for proper operation.

22. Start the engine and verify the low oil pressure light is not illuminated.

23. Finish your inspection by checking the fuel level to ensure there is enough fuel for your trip.
